Well, after almost falling on my Gluteus Maximus a couple of times (amazing how quickly you can catch yourself with your elbows). I finally went to setting the seat and testing it with my arms before settling the nether regions there.
The problem is, once the post is set you can't just lift the seat and expect it to collapse next to the wall. The bolt usually falls straight into corner between the wall and the floor and the seat remains there at about a 45 degree angle. It takes a sweep of the leg to actually move the bolt out of the way to enable the seat to collapse.
Going down the hill out of Silver Plume is the only time that I would usually sit as the Fireman's job is cake. Up Hill, however, is another matter. I'd usually put the seat down and watch the stack and the engineer to try to keep things hot. I later found that the seats in 844 and 3985 are MUCH more comfortable.
