The D&S has deep pockets, but not that deep. The only way I see the 42 ever running again is the same way the 20 or the 315 recieved attention. Volunteers or a wealthy benefactor. Don't forget the D&S let the 498 and 493 reach the state they are in presently after being cocooned for 12 years in Alamosa. Don't get me wrong, I love the D&S, but that operation has to operate in a manner that will keep it financially afloat. This is the railroad that has to deal with constantly keeping men employed to watch for fires. The railroad went to such measures as purchasing diesel locos for fire patrols as well as switching. This is the railroad that has put expensive scrubbers to control smoke as well as expensive pellets to reduce emissions from their engines at night, all to be a good neighbor.
Essentially I am stating the D&S has plenty to spend thier money on. If the 476, 493, and 498 are not worth spending money to restore, restroing the 42 will never make sense.
