Michael,
As you continue to read posts here and ask questions you will begin to realize that, just as in any other field of interest, there is an abundance of opinions out there in the world. EVERYBODY has them. Be very wary of taking as gospel what someone says they heard about such and such until you get to know the source real well. Some folks are more vocal than others, some have REAL knowledge while others do a fair amount of assuming, and some simply just don't know sh*t but think they do and are quick to remind you that they KNOW what they are talking about. After a while here, you will begin to spot the BS'ers and the grumps and the real treasure troves of information.
Sometimes you may just shake your head when you realize that the BSer, the grump and the treasure trove might be the same person on any given day. We are a very diverse group with one thing in common. WE ALL LOVE RAILROADS, ESPECIALLY NG AND/OR STEAM NG. With this affliction comes passion and sometimes even over active imaginations. BUT, a word of advice, ask questions tactfully while you get used to all of us old farts. I can assure you we were all young once (well, at least most of us) and you TOO will get old like us someday.
Above all else - KEEP AN OPEN MIND & KEEP ASKING QUESTIONS.
Speaking of young folks and NG railroading here is a pict I took of three young men from New Jersey that spent a week in Chama in June earning their BSA Railroading merit badge. The whole troop did a heckuva job I might add AND slept in tents all week.
