The attached picture was taken at Owenyo, California during the last days of the SP narrow gauge in 1959. The subject of the picture is Bob Cartt who was the agent/telegrapher there. So the position of your dummy at Chama may be pretty historically correct.
It looks as if the telegraph circuit at Owenyo was still in use, although I have no recollection. While this is not Rio Grande, it is narrow gauge (well actually dual guage, since this is where the ng. connected with the std. gauge).
Of particular interest are the piles of paper, the general disorganization, and rather primitive arrangement of everything. Again, while SP not DRGW, this is an ambience that was pretty common. We don't want our historic replicas to be too darn neat and clean.
Modelers put a lot of effort into "weathering" their equipment. We need to do that with the 12-inch to the foot "models" as well.
