I think I would head up toward Animas Forks. There is a lot to see on the way up. There is Howardsville, Middleton, Eureka (the foundation of the Sunnyside Mill is awesome). The last time I was up there the road north of Eureka was kind of rough, not impassable but rough. Then you get to Animas Forks and the is quite a bit to look at up there.

Fritz Klinke would be the one to ask about the roads around Silverton.
