Take a basic 1881 60 class, say 268, and document the changes in appliances, cabs, smokeboxes, stacks, dome covers, headlights (and lighting in general), pilots, running boards, air tanks, tender tanks, couplers, etc. etc. etc. until you end up with the 268 of 1955. OK, add paint and lettering schemes. Few, if any, locomotive have sustained as many changes over the course of so long a time.
Fascinating.
