Not just UP.
Look at the surviving Great Western engines, as well as some of the small-to-mid-size engines used by C&S/CB&Q in the west.
Long smokeboxes were not a fad; they served a useful purpose as part of the drafting and netting scheme necessary for properly burning the types of coal found in the local area. Had they been a fad, they would have been replaced early on.
