Extended smoke boxes were a fad. Grimshaw in the Locomotive Catechism contends that an extended smokebox increases the retention of cinders in the front of the smokebox by creating a "dead space" in the draft. In actual fact while more cinders are trapped in the front end, this can lead to early deterioration of the smokebox due to acidic corrosion. Many engines with extended smokeboxes were later shortened.
