I conclude that, as trucks have evolved, there has been a general tendency for truck wheelbase to increase. I can think of the following factors related to wheelbase:

1) The tendency to hunt decreases as wheelbase is increased.

2) The wear of wheels and rail on curves increases as wheelbase is increased.

3) The weight and material cost of the truck increases as the wheelbase is increased.

4) The load span of the side frame increases as the wheelbase is increased.

Many of the arch bar trucks on the Quincy & Torch Lake ore cars have a 3’-3” wheelbase. My understanding is that at least some of these trucks were built prior to 1890.
