I, too, thought that was one of the most telling lines in the whole thing. Seems to me that promoting economic prosperity should be one of the fundamental responsibilities in a small town like La Veta. You'd think we'd see more support - or at least gestures of cooperation - for anything that brings that many tourists/customers to your town every day.
Having dealt with more than a few reporters in my time, though, I'm willing to give the mayor some slack for the moment. Some reporters have an agenda, and can slice and dice quotes in amazing ways to make you look bad. I have no idea if these quotes are inaccurate or even just taken out of context, but I'm just saying it's possible. It's also possible that, as presented, the mayor really doesn't have any interest in the economic well-being of his town.
