Straying far afield from narrow gauge, I would offer some interesting information related to the Rio Grande/Southern Pacific/Union Pacific mergers. The D&RGW actually bought the SP - the owner of the combined RR's decided SP was a more well known and "marketable" name so decided to keep the SP name and drop D&RGW (a shame in my view but I didn't have any say in the matter). When the SP - UP merger happened, it was actually the D&RGW corporate entity (which still existed although it wasn't an operating company) which bought the Union Pacific RR. They then turned around and renamed the whole thing Union Pacific RR.
I find it very interesting that it was actually the Denver & Rio Grande Western RR that bought the Union Pacific RR. The powers that be just decided to call the combined RR's Union Pacific. Just goes to show what a truely seccessful and well run RR the D&RGW was.
