Wade...493 was the last freight engine I saw in service in 1968. We had chased 483 and 493 from Chama to Cumbres, whereas 493 being the helper, was sent ahead of 483 with the train. After shooting both at Tanglefoot and Los Pinos we headed for Antonito, and waited for 493, and then paced it all the way back to Alamosa, and headed for home after that. 483 had some switching to do someplace like Osier, so we heard it would be dark before it arrived. 493 had the pilot plow on it at the time, and it just looked like a real workhorse. 498 had come over from Durango and we had shot it the day before. It then went back to Durango on this same day we did the Chama-Alamosa run. Earl told me later that 478 was dispatched to Gato to act as helper for 498 back to Durango that day. Man, you just couldn't be in two places at once!!! At least we got three days of NG action in 1968, the last year.
