Robin, I'm friendly with the Degolyer staff, they have very little other than random parts that are not more then one or two for any given locomotive, except for one or two locos that they have nearly a whole set for, but that I am not interested in. They have some erecting cards, random parts and a whole lot of CB&Q drawings, but nothing that I really need. Also the filing system the they use is not the one Baldwin used, and you have to know what loco came first in a Baldwin class, then second etc. to be able to put a whole drawing set together because Baldwin only issued new drawings with a new loco in a class and reused all the old drawings that came before it, so you have to start at loco #1 in a class to get the whole drawing set together and , well its just a mess over there. I am going to get them straightened out one day, but I can not right now. I live about 30 minutes from the SMU campus and have not been over there since 1997 because of that filing system. You are so right about the pencil only and they will give you the white paper, 7 sheets, I remember, and I seem to remember that you have to give them the paper when you are done. Once they know you it gets a little better. I do have the copies of their Baldwin parts and erecting catalogs here, as I bought copies years ago, but they don't help with much because of the way the parts were cataloged.
If anyone ever wants me to look anything up in those catalogs, just email me at dbloyed (at) airmail.net and I will be happy to look for them.
