I believe that CHS and Railstar are making every effort to be sure that the Loop will operate a full season behind #12 this year. However, anybody that has ever been involved in substantial repairs to any historical or unique locomotives (steam or dismals) knows that it can be repeatadly frustrating beyond belief to maintain the expected or desired schedule for repairs and not comprimise safety and reliability. If every goes right, I hope to hear that #12 operated on opening day; if not, then I would expect that it will be as soon as humanly possible. This would be true of ANY tourist operation with limited equipment available to them facing substantial repairs to their primary equipment.
At this time, my opinion is that any claim the Loop will not operate steam at all this year is unfounded rumor that serves no purpose other to incite fear and criticism for someone's undetermined purpose. Regardless of any of our opinions towards CHS, either the former or current operator, or certain persons employed by them - Is there anyone here that wishes to see the Loop really fail? close for the season? - maybe never to reopen?
Because I believe too many statements have been posted without indicating the author may have a "conflict of interest" in expressing their opinion - be advised that I was employed by Railstar for a short time at the Loop and was involved in preparing equipment for the 2005 season, and am currently working with SVRR on the 1203.
So - we all just have to sit and wait for Railstar or CHS to issue an official statement or for May 26 to see what happens. And be entertained by our own speculation and rumors. Good luck to those working on the #12 and at the Loop - may it be done as soon as possible in a safe manner - because I've been there.
