I realize this information is not narrow gauge but thought it might be of interest.
On the standard gauge the D&RGW had a large fleet of flat cars specifically designated "rip rap flat". In some cases, Grand Junction for example, some of them would be stored in the yard pre-loaded with rip rap ready for movement when necessary.
Back on the narrow gauge: In Jerry Day's Denver and Rio Grande Western Work Equipment OA to OZ, "Narrow Gauge Pictorial" Volume VII, there is a photo of narrow gauge rip rap operations on page 122. In that view derrick OP is being used but it is an example of loading rip rap.
