The attachment is a photo copy of an SVRy train sheet from the above date given to me by a friend. I know it is not really legible, but perhaps you can see at least the form which is 18"tall x 32" wide. The notations by the 2 dispatchers is very small printing, but quite legible if you have your nose in front of it. Here are a few details of what it tells us about that day. Up in the RH upper corner there is a small notation that says "Mr Howe Prarrie
to S Baker on #2". Mr. Howe was A.S.Howe Superintendent of the rr at that time. #2 being the daily East bound pass. train.
On across the top it lists the time each of the 2 dispatchers went on and off duty. The first one went on at 6AM and off at 2PM. The second shift was from 2-10PM. The dispatchers initials are shown, but the names are unknown to me.
Just down a bit on the upper RH corner are places to fill in the AM weather at each station on the line. All stations report clear with the 6:30AM temp at Baker of 62deg., Whitney 6:50AM 54deg., and Dixie at 8:20 it was 66 deg. In the upper left corner is the PM weather, but the only data recorded was "clear" at all stations.
Across the top middle is listed all engines in service and their crews with their call and tie up times. The following engines were in service 20,19, 18, 1 and 50. Engine 4 is listed elsewhere on the form working the Baker yards.
In the main body of the form are noted the times the various trains are at specific points on the line. The left hand side is Westbound movements, and the right side is Eastbound. Down the center of the form are the stations on the line with miles listed from Baker and miles between stations and number of cars that could be handled in sidings. These capacities are as follows: Baker 30 cars, S Baker 300 cars, Salisbury 10 cars, Lockhart 10, Thompson 8, Boulder Gorge 16, Mason 20, Dean 27,McEwen 47, S Wye 30, Sumpter 50, Larch 70, Alder Springs 15, McCoy 20, Whitney 15, Carrol 8, Tipton 18, White Pine 35, Austin 12, Batesville 10, Dixie 6 and Prarrie 60.
In the next section down on the RH side of the forms is a section for work trains. 19 was the only engine shown in work train service and this was it's second shift, it's second crew being called at 7PM and tieing up at 4:05AM. Elsewhere on the form it is shown as "Austin Night Helper" though in fact it was working alone moving cars 5 at at time from Austin to Tipton Summit making 2 trips, returning to Austin lite for the second set of 5 cars. Then with a 10 car consist at Tipton, the 10 cars were taken down to Whitney. 5 cars were then moved to Larch Summit, with 19 then returning light to Austin. The crew then switched to engine 20 presumably to give the hostler time to service 19 and the crew took 7 more loads to Tipton summit with the 20 returning light to Austin and tieing up.
On across the lower middle of the form is shown the "Yard Crew" with crew names and call and tie up time. The engine was 4 and the crew was called at 7AM and tied up at 6PM.
The next large area of the form across the lower middle is "Helper Service". It appears that on this day Eng 20 spent most of it as helper with engine 19, but then in the next block above where 19's night activities are listed, it is listed as helper with 20, with these movements described.
In the next section across are shown the Westward and Eastward freight movements not described elsewhere, 18 was on the point out of Baker in the morning with frt. cars. The makeup of the consist is 1 car of mdse for Prarrie, 16 empty lumber cars, 25 empties for BWP, 12 empties for Stoddard, 1 empty wood car and Cab.#6. The set offs are shown as well.
The other westbound movement shown is Train 3 with eng. 50 from Austin to Prarrie with one box car and cab. #2. This train was ill fated as I'll describe later.
East bound Ex 50 (formerly train 3) from Prarrie to Bates has 3 carloads of wool and Cab. #2. At Bates, 10 cars of lumber and 4 of "S&C" (which I assume are sawdust and chips) are added for the 1 mile trip to Austin.
The other Eastbound movement is 18's return to Baker with a final consist after picking up cars at various points and then more at Curry: 16 cars of lumber, 31 cars of BWP logs (BWP is Baker White Pine Lbr. Co.), 1 empty box car, 11 cars of Stoddard Lbr. Co logs and caboose 6. That for the math challenged is 58 loads, one empty and the caboose. Not a small consist for an obscure NG in the backwoods of Ore.
The lower left section of the form is "Detentions". There is nothing of note here, just routine stops for wood, water and lunch for each crew, except for eng. 19 which is shown to have lost 30 min."going to fire in Eccles wood yard at Austin". More on this in a few paragraphs.
The next section across is "Telephones". In this section I will type exactly as shown on the form: " No 3 Struck Prarrie Motor Car at 8:45 at MP 72 demolishing Motor Car no One hurt Eng not damaged". I have put together a roster of SVRy's motor cars which is from #1 to #21. A few of the #'s are other roadway equpment such as a velocipede. Only 2 #'s are a mystery and based on the date, I am guessing this may be mystery car #10 that got hit. I bet someone had some explaining to do.
The next section is "Engine Failures". Under this heading it says the Agent at Austin reports Eccles wood yard on fire at 9:35AM. It says he reports that SVRy's wood yard is not in danger of fire. It says mill crew from the Eccles mill has cut the burning wood pile in two, then goes on to say the fire is under control at 10:00AM
Below this in the same section it says that "Chief Engineer Sibray reports from Salisbury at 4:46PM that 2 stumps are burning . Told Mr.Sibray to Send Sec. Men to put them out".
In the next area which is the bottom of the "Helper Service" section already described it notes that "Stod. Eng. 3 Curry 6:55AM to Mason 7:00AM lite" then "Stod Eng 3 Mason 7:05 to Curry 7:10 2 empty log cars.
Too bad more of these forms haven't survived from various years and times of the year. It would be interesting to see what wintertime operation was like.
