The North Jersey record is the one I was refering to, Herb. I am quite sure that on the record 489 had a standard 5 chime as the bullet whistle disappeared from 489 very shortly after it arrived in Alamosa from Salida. There is the famous RWR pics of a meet at Big Horn where there is an engine on each leg of the wye and on the main. One is 489 with a 5 chime. Pics of 490 on the RMMRC trip in 56? show the bullet top 3 chime. About the time 490 get set aside, 487 shows up with the whistle, which it carried until it was set aside in late 1967.
There were a couple of bullet top Powells. I think 341 had one along with 456. Both worked out of Gunnison at the time, and therefore could be the same whistle. The bullet top on 342/456 what shorter than 487's. The one used on 476 was also shorter than 487's and didn't sound at all like it.
One difference between 487's and C&TS 489's Powells that I just thought of was 489's whistle had an 1 1/2" valve under it whereas 487's whould have had 2". There was a 2" X 1 1/2" bell reducer on the whistle that looked like it had been there since Rayonier had it and wasn't about to try to remove it. That would account for some of the tone difference, while not effecting the overall chord.
I recorded 489 on the point of a 31 car tripleheader from Coxo one cold clear day. When Atkinson whistled for Cumbres, it was a perfect match for the 487. It made me smile.
Maybe 489's Powell will make an appearance on La Veta someday.
