The D&RGW did not operate separate ski trains on Cumbres as they did on Marshall Pass. They would attach a few cars to the west bound San Juan and leave them on Los Pinos siding and pick them up with the east bound evening train. The skiers would use the coaches as warming huts. Some skiers got off at Cumbres and caught the evening train back. A skier was injured at Cumbres and the D&RGW sent an engine and caboose with a doctor on board and he was taken back to Chama for treatment.
On Marshall Pass, the D&RGW ran separate ski trains out of Salida and Gunnison to Marshall Pass summit. A few times they used an engine with a single coach as a ski lift from Tank 7 on the west side to the summit. In 37, they used 472 on one day. The ski trains out of Salida were very long and were powered by two K37s (have photos). Will be doing an article on D&RGW ski trains in the Prospector Magazine as soon as finish some research on Utah ski trains.
