The swamp and associated problems lengthening the original roundhouse stalls are probably what led to the structures demise.
To refresh rusty memories, the only three stalls in Durango that would accomodate a 480 engine were the three lengthened stalls, #5-7. That was done in the 30's. A 490 without a plow would fit into a shorter stall, but not a 480. Probably the same situation at Chama.
