From the D&RGW Annual Report for 1923:
" By order entered August 24, 1923, the Court authorized the Receiver to change the gauge of the Farmington Branch. This was a standard gauge line connecting with the narrow gauge Alamosa-Durango line at Carbon Junction."
" Numerous complaints were received from shippers over the Farmington Branch because of delays incident to the transfers above mentioned, especially of live stock and perishable freight."
"September 1, 1923, work was started on changing this branch to narrow gauge and the change was completed without delay to trains, on September 3rd, at a cost of $12,255.49. Of this amount $7,164.04 was paid regular maintenance forces used on the work, and $5,091.45 to extra forces hired for this particular piece of work. It is estimated that saving in operating expenses resulting from the change will amount to $50,000.00 per annum."
