Brett, This is an interesting approach although it seems to me there would still be a lot of smoke. It's analogous to making charcoal, which does smoke. I find in my home wood stove I do like you indicated before going to bed, and the next morning I have a nice bed of hot coals. The house temperature dips on a little. However, I know it emits copious smoke throughout the night, at least until the wood becomes basically charcoal.
Albeit wood smoke can be less offensive than coal smoke, even alder, hickory, maple and oak can be offensive after awhile. It would be like living near a meat smoking plant with no emission controls it seems to me.
All that aside, even if the smoke is less in total throughout the night, the next morning, just as someone posted, you gotta return to using coal before departing Durango.
Do the local @#$%& complain about the diesel exhaust? I suppose they complain about any exhaust. The best solution is oil, although it is not historical.

Gonna be at McEwen this weekend? It's the last two days of regular season plus EFDs on Friday and Monday. After that possibly some more EFDs and then the Fall Foilage Special.
Hope to see you at the Annual Meeting if not sooner.
