Emission from a wood fire could be practically nill over night if the procedure is used that was used on the OLC and other wood burning logging engines in the Sumpter Valley country. It works well on the WH Eccles Heisler today as well. This procedure is to shut off all valves to minimize loss of water/steam, flood the boiler, fill the firebox FULL of wood and cap the stack, with of course the air dampers closed as well. An engine so left at say 8 or 9PM will be in good shape at 6 or 7AM as far as steam and water level. The thing is of course that as soon as fresh coal (or wood)is thrown in come morning to bring the steam up and be ready to roll, there is going to be smoke.
