...well perhaps not completely out of luck. If you're lucky, that is!
Winter before last, the San Juans were experiencing record snows sandwiched in between record drought years. As a consequence, the D&S was kind enough to remove the spark arrestor from 473 and run with a straight stack for the Winter Photographer's Special that year.
I wouldn't have deemed it a big deal before that trip, but I have to admit that 473 looked exceptionally nice without the screen. That little treat was much appreciated.
