The Rio Grande used spark arrestors most of the working life of the larger K class locomotives--I guess for that matter even the smaller C class locomotives sported them as well. From what I understand the 30's and 40's were especially dry times so they were used quite extenstively. Follow the link for a shot of the 488 in Salida in the 30's.
