more useless compound trivia

In my Baldwin compound book it shows the formula for figuring the TE of a Vauclain compound. Its essentially the same as above only the high pressure cylinder is figured at .667 boiler pressure (instead of .85) and the low pressure cylinder is figured at .500 boiler pressure and the cylinders are added together. The result for a class 125 is 23,850 lbs.
Further investigation reveals the pipe on the simpling valve to be about 1 1/2". Not as big as I had thought.
I guess someday I ought to go study the Manitou & Pike's Peak cog engines. I belive they are the only Vauclain compounds left and I guess the only ones that were remotely successful. Wonder what their secret was?
