Templeton could well come up with an AFE documenting these additions, but I believe they were added in the very early 60's.
#499's tender had them (now behind #491 at the CRMM), and that engine was retired in 1961.
#486 never had them in D&RGW service, and was, I believe, the only 480 (excepting #485, of course) not to have them.
I can't recall evidence off the top of my head of these being widespread in the late 50's, I've always thought them to be a 60's addition, and as #499 indicates, it was early. They were painted silver in the 60's. They were painted Aspen gold on the 470's to match the coaches in the 70's.
