Brian, The fall stock show was in the early days primarily sheep. I believe it was in the the late 1800s that ranchers began to shift the balance toward beef. This is described in Herman Oliver's book "Gold and Cattle Country". He has a humorous account of riding along with the Oliver cattle from Prarie City to Baker City (the SV required the cattle owner to ride on the train). Also, a book by I think it was Hudspeth, describes catching the train near or at McEwen to carry the family dairy products and vegetables to Sumpter. Bob Bergstrom or Ron B. undoubtedly have better info, but I haven't heard much about road side industries other than those mentioned in Farrell's book.
