John,
Lumber was shipped rain or shine, snow or not, only when the line was completely blocked would the trains stop. The SV did a large Fall stock rush, several solid trains of stockcars a year. In the gold rush era tons of equipment and supplies were shipped to Sumpter, ore and gold were shipped out. The Boxcars handled all the rest of the stuff, not quite sure what was shipped though. I would assume LCL would go buy passenger train.
