Steve, thanks for your response. Some of my comments weren't in direct response to the slice I quoted, but to other sentiments on the thread.
To make a short story long, the whole "any steam is good steam, so kwicherbichen" attitude is not one I share. If someone wants to paint red stripes and silly names on his 4-8-4, put extra lights on it, and haul bilevel coaches, he doesn't need my permission, or blessing. If you enjoy trains, and want to run your EMD Model 40 with a streamlined diner and a wood caboose, go to it and have fun.
But as the old saying goes, don't pee on my leg and try to convince me how lucky I am that it's raining
" /> . That isn't "history," or a "museum," or "preservation." It's "big boys playing with big toys," and all the shucking and jiving in the world doesn't change that. But if it's a private entity, go ahead - I can choose not to patronize such ventures.
That said, on to the CHS. We can split hairs all week about which shekels went into whose pocket, and where they originated. Saying "no tax dollars were spent on THIS project" sounds to me a lot like Ralph Reed saying that the $4 Million in Indian money in HIS pocket came from the 5% of non-gambling revenues. "Too cute by half," as the Brits say.
But even if the Colorado HISTORICAL Society doesn't get a single penny of tax revenue, it is a
". . . Public institution located within the Department of Higher Education." According to the CHS web site, CHS performs a function delegated by state government. And CHS's mission statement is in direct contradiction to your "we are not a museum" statement.
I'm not concerned with what color the cab roof on no. 9 is, and from what I could see during the entire "Georgetown Micturation Match of 2004" there looked to be plenty of fault on both sides. But one of the claims made by the Colorado HISTORICAL Society during the Late Unpleasantness was how much more historical "The Loop" would be under CHS control.
That's why your "we are not a museum" comment surprised me so much. Because your landlord goes to great lengths to claim that they are, indeed, a museum.
At a minimum, you've got a disagreement with your landlord. I hope that's all it is - it would be a shame if CHS is trying to pull a fast one on the Colorado citizenry.
Good luck to CHS and RailStar getting their story straight.
