I think that just about everyone here would like to see the 490's run again. One of the challenges, though, is finding a need for them.
Look at it this way: With a few exceptions, almost all of the D&RGW narrow gauge locomotives that worked between Ouray/Montrose/ Gunninson/Crested Butte/Monarch/Salida/Alamosa/Durango/Farmington/Silverton in the 1950's are still hanging around.
Some, like 340 have found operating homes, others, like 268 have museum homes.
But even with the current traffic on the Silverton Branch that was not there in the 1950's, there still an awful lot of missing trackage that once was the reason these machines were needed.
And the 490's are pretty much to big to be useful at most ng lines other than the D&S or C&TS.
Of course as long as they are around, who knows? If a major benefactor ponied up a million and said he wanted the 495 in the shop tomorrow, I'm sure it would be trotted into the shop forthwith!
