There are similar joints in the old parts of the Santa Fe yard at Grand Canyon, and I think a few along the main. I was puzzled by them on a speeder run from Williams to GC and took a picture of one. I'm not sure where the photo is, but the joint had a pretty normal angle bar on the inside, a u shaped piece of iron channel on the outside, with wood outside of that, then the L shaped angle against that and wrapping under the rail. I'll see if I can find the pic.
