The claim made in the original patent was that by having a fishplate that was even with the railhead (thus partially carrying the wheel), as well as a bottom plate to support the joint, there would be little to no flex of a joint as a wheel passed over, thus eliminating wear on both the track structure and on the wheel.
His later patents seem to give up the idea of having the outside fishplate even with the rail and focused on using the integrated baseplate to minimize joint motion.
