Being from NM you may appreciate our little Santa Fe escapade in 1997.
Les Jarrett and I were in NM, doing shooting for our 4th and final America By Rail feature, called "Route of the SW Chief". In it we show the ride from Chicago to LA of course on Amtrak, but divert to side trips along the way. So we planned a stop at Lamy, where we ride the Santa Fe Southern(C&TS was also in it), and we wanted to show a few shots of Santa Fe.
So, we went to the historic district where there were street vendors and such, and Les went in with one of our Betacam SP cameras and started shooting some street scenes. As I recall one of merchants or some business guy said we could not shoot this material unless we paid some sort of fee to do so. Les was upset by this, and I was ready to let it go, saying forget those folks. Anyway later in the day, Les asked to use my back-up camera, a small Mini-dv that we used onboard the Galley on Amtrak, etc, and he went back to shoot some street scenes in Santa Fe. Nobody bothered him, as they all just thought he was an average tourist, without the commercial looking camera!!!
So, sometimes there is a love-hate relationship the other way folks...Sometimes the tourists don't like the locals!!!!
By the way, I think I did buy a couple of trinkets for the wife or daughter back in Ohio, but no rubber tomahawks, although there were some for sale
