Actually, Greg,
The 9 was in "Q" livery for the 1939 World's Fair in New York.
Afterward, she was stored in the Aurora, Illinois shops for 10 years and then was brought out to appear at the Chicago Exposition in 1949.
For that event, the guys at the Aurora shops created #9's "Chief Crazy Horse" disguise, which included the removal and destruction of 9's pilot, and started that goofy stuff with the red paint and fake stack.
268 was there as the "Montezuma".
Halloween came early in 1949.
