Re: Recent Steam in SA Tour

Yes I read that in the report regarding the video guy, and told David to forward my email to him when its completed.
The trip was not without its difficulties, and I could not help but think of the C&TS when David mentioned the fire hazard problems, that nearly messed them up on the George-Knysna line.
What sets South Africa apart from China is the diverse scenery, great weather, and varied classes of locomotives, that are all in an English speaking country. This according to David Rodgers himself, is what will attract enthusiasts to make further trips to SA when possible. I did not see any figures for the cost of the trip but it did state that 72 photographers participated.
I liked the deal where the Garratt came to the rescue of a malfunctioning 19D. In 1977 we saw Garratts on Montague Pass where in 2006 they had to send the Garratt that was to rescue the 19D. I did note the lack of water cars, and it did make the trains look much more realistic. I wonder if the water tank worked at Furiesburg. Thats where I got a cab ride in 1984 in 3405 which was the second engine of a doubleheader from Ficksburg to Bethlehem.
