Greg,
In looking through "Steam on the Veld" there are 25 different classes of 4-8-2 listed. I couldn't find a total, but by adding up the assigned numbers, I came up with 1342 Mountains built between 1909 and 1948. South Africa was without a doubt the largest user of the 4-8-2 design. And that's not counting all the "double mountain" 4-8-2+2-8-4 Garrats!
