In general the mainline rail from Antonito to just east of Osier is 70 lb. rail laid in 1922-3. From that point to just east of Chama is 85 lb. rail laid in 1936. The Chama yard (and west to Durango when it was still there) is back to circa 1922 70 lb. rail. That's "in general", and is from the Alamosa Division profile date 1-1-37, but seems to be reasonably accurate as of 2001.
I believe there is probably quite a bit of 65 lb. rail in sidings. And since 2002 some 90 lb. rail has been laid on curves and other places to replace 70 lb. rail. In 2001 the Commission acquired several miles of good used 90 lb. rail from U. S. government surplus.
If I remember correctly, one of the C&TS's problems is that 70 lb. switch material is hard to come by. Last time I was through Big Horn the switches had been removed there and I would guess the reason is the old points and frogs were worn out, and there are no replacements readily available. Which is why I covet the almost mint condition 70 lb. switch material that sits wasted at Gato.
