On the other hand... take a break from writing your book and help the FEBT fix the track! There are also many other railroad museums around the country who could use your help. I am also involved in helping to rebuild a 2.5 mile section of the old ET&WNC through the Doe River Gorge in Eastern Tennessee. We have a train running on 1.3 miles of restored track, and speeders on the rest. But it wouldn't have happened if we didn't believe it could be done and then put in the first three ties!!!
You have some good ideas, and groups like the FEBT can use your help to get things done. Your attitude of making a suggestion and then being willing to take steps to make it happen is an attitude that is needed in rail preservation, where there are too many armchair preservationists already! Besides, you will probably get more material for the book you are writing - especially if it is about railroading! Those of us who have put our money where our mouths are have often discovered 1) we were put to use, 2) we ended up doing far more than we expected, and 3) the friendships developed were an additional benefit to helping the restoration of whatever it was we were working on! By the way, did I ever tell you about the time........!!!
