On the first train west in 1971 with 483, we made it to Lava Tank and took water there before dropping 492 and some gons in the track that connects the upper and lower main line there. Two gons full of ballast were then taken to Big Horn and dropped. 483 and the remaining open-ended pipe gon cut in behind the tender returned to Antonito. It was a long and tiring day.
There was plenty of water in Lava Tank at the time, but I don't believe the C&TS ever got it filled before the fire.
