I heard that Lava Tank was the only water stop on the now Cumbres & Toltec that needed a pump so I wondered if the cash-strapped CATS would spend money to put water in it when high-quality water was available at Sublette.
I once saw a picture of the 493 stopped at the tank westbound with a midtrain helper waiting its turn. I imagine there were other photographs as well. Engineer Ben Greathouse once said he stopped at every tank he came to.
