Actually, the shop in Baker did a good job in retaining the adhesion after the tanks were removed. They added steel and concrete weights to the running boards that helped retain the traction.
This must have worked since they successfully replaced all the wood burning Mikes for the run over the 2 summits to Bates.
As they had done when they arrived on the Uintah Ry, these unigue mallets totally changed railroad operations at Sumpter when they arrived there.
