I checked the Smithsonian's Folkways web site this AM. There are at least five albums of steam locomotive sounds, one that appears to be cable car sounds, and two of railroad songs in their list. Most appear to be availabel as custom made to order CD's for about $18.00 each.
The D&RGW narrow gauge is the subject of Volume 3 of the Sounds of Steam Locomotives series. Side 1 is "A Ride on The Train To Yesterday"; side 2 is "Three Little Engines and 33 Cars."
There must be more of this stuff out there. Thanks for jogging the mind.
