bring a cold engine up to steam much faster

Hi,
"bring a cold engine up to steam much faster"
The reason we in live steam bring up a head of steam slowly in our locos and let them cool off slowly is to reduce the thermal stresses on the boiler and the rest of the locomotive.
A fast temperature gradient is more likely to cause cracks in the pipe joints and the silver soldered joints (for copper boilers) than a slow temperature gradient.
I assume it is similar for full size.
My 2-6-2 4.75" gauge loco I could drop the steam in 10 minutes if I needed to, but I normally let it cool off naturally to reduce the stresses on the boiler itself.
For what it's worth.
