A little ways down the highway from Williams, AZ is a place called Welch. It was here that the ATSF re-aligned the track and bypassed a tunnel in Johnson Canyon. The shot below is the western portal of the tunnel. It is an interesting tunnel with fine rock work and the upper portion is metal lined and riveted. The tunnel isn't extremely long but is built on a curve.
To get to the tunnel, one drives on the old grade for a distance. It gets interesting in spots where the grade is washed out a bit. It is also quite narrow in some of the cuts where the brush has grown in. As you get closer to the tunnel there is also a very short bridge that can be driven across. It is an interesting place to visit but you must be careful of flash floods and the heat in the summer.
It was over cast when we drove in on Sunday but not too threatening. The rain the day before had cooled the temp down quite a bit.
Ok, that is all of the non narrow gauge content for now.
