The pictures were taken on 6/27 and the #9 was supposedly going back to the Loop in 3 weeks?
Huckleberry RR test fired the boiler on 464 on May 5 and expect to have it in service soon after the first of August. A crew of four have been putting the engine back together for 3 months, with five years worth of machined parts, rebuilt tender, turned drivers, all new bushings, new smoke box, new flues, new stay bolts, etc. going into the re-assembly.
I see very few signs of driver, rod or bushing work on the #9. They haven't put the boiler back together, so there hasn't been a hydro or test steaming. The cylinders look like the main machining that has been done. No photos showing what went into the boiler, but from the outside, with a few exceptions, it looks like it's going to be a "paint brush restoration."
This looks like the CHS is trying to cover their promises with a half baked return to service, not the full rebuild that is needed.
Still, it's good to see that work is progressing and there is a chance that we will see a real C&S steamer cross the Devil's Gate Bridge in our life times. Something I wouldn't have given odds on a few years ago!
