Tom -
My daughter and I stayed at The Shamrock Hotel - as it was once known - last August, and I'm sure you will enjoy it. I've stayed there MANY times over the past 40 years, and have always considered it Chama's premier combination of nostalgia and comfort: not too fancy, but very cozy. PLUS, you can enjoy a free cup of coffee* in the morning whilst basking in the sun and observing from the front balcony all that is going on in the engine yard across the street.

* Per John, John and Greg, just be sure it is Barbara who makes the morning coffee, and not Roger. (I always add a lot of cocoa to my coffee, so I'm not qualified to pass judgement - you'll just have to take their word for it, secondhand ... ) .

p.s. Cindy and I took a horseback ride up into the wildlife preserve in the mountains north of town one afternoon while we were there - Roger, your host at The Hotel - can direct you to the outfitter if you're interested. Costs about the same as a train ticket, but WELL worth it. We had a wonderful time; there were a few elk and some deer, and we were treated to a full moon rising through a sunset-lit cloudbank across the valley as we returned to the corral ... INCREDIBLE!!
