On the surface, I can see how that looks to be true Mike. However, we gave the WP&Y the gondola AND some cash, not to mention shipping costs. Trucks are not cheap. In the end, it works out to be a fair deal all around. The White Pass gets rid of some cars that they have no use for anymore and still have lots of the same type left on site. In return they get an original freight car that is historic to the line and soon to be the only one running on the line. I think the White Pass should be applauded for taking an interest in obtaining some of their more rare and historic rolling stock.
As for the SVRy, we give up a great museum piece and a car that has been in our photo freights in the past but in the “not too distant” future, we hope to begin our 5 mile Union Creek Extension and we will need flat cars. After that, we hope to convert one or two into passenger cars. Also, not everyone at the SVRy is happy to see this gondola leave. Jerry and Taylor both put a lot of work into this car.
As for being good horse traders, well we are not any better then the White Pass guys. Take my word for it. If we were better, we would have those original SVRy coaches back on the SVRy. In the end, it is just nice to see a historic piece like the #663 heading home, for me anyway. I think Jerry still isn’t talking to me
