On the 463. What Earl and I have discussed in the past, and what John bush wrote about it, and considering what was done when it was first rebuilt, I come up with the same conclusion everytime.
More than anything it probably needs running gear work. The biggest thing will probably be rebuilding the lead truck, and the trailing truck. They will need a new side rod to replace the one that broke in 2002. They can't borrow 464's forever.
I believe that something must be out of alignment. There has to be something wrong for it to break that side rod like that. I think it happend at Sublette?
As Carlos said on here a little while ago, the throttle was pretty bad in 2002. It closed on it's own. So the throttle valve will need to be repaired.
The biggest things are probably spring rigging, brake rigging, and the lead and trailing trucks.
It will run a lot smoother, and be even less hard on track than it already was before.
