Not all surviving NYC engines went off-line. Somehow the 999 survived in the old shop buildings at East Syracuse, NY until the engine was given to the museum in Chicago. Unfortunately, it never saw the light of day in E. Syracuse and was a well-kept secret except among railroaders who worked out of Dewitt Yard.
