Depends on the situation (i.e., size of the train). Some trains were doubleheaded all the way. On the RGS helpers were used Ridgway-Placerville, Vance - Lizard head and both directions over Cima. Usually if a helper was added/subtracted somewhere along the run it was on it's own orders. As an example a helper could couple on to a train at Mancos and run to Cima, uncouple and run light ahead to Dolores where it could then be turned and placed on a Durango bound freight and retrace it's route back to Cima. Or layover at Dolores and help a train to Rico or Telluride. Lots of variables involved.
